2004 Data Reduction

Data taken from runs in 2004 there are 3 nights which correspond to 3 directories where the raw data is held in Kingpin:

/hires/RawData/2004-October-0[3,4,5]/

The reduced data is currently held:

/hires/xavier/alpha/Oct04/2004-October-0[3,4,5]

To view the New Data:

On Kingpin:

Go to:

/hires/xavier/alpha/Oct04/2004-October-03/

start idl

IDL>hires_specplt,/fspec
% Compiled module: HIRES_SPECPLT.
% Compiled module: X_GUILIST.

And then a list of possible files will pop up:

FSpec/all_PHL957_B.fits

Click the one you want.

A window pops up with wavelength over some fairly small range. Check if the x and y values change when you more your cursor over different places in the plot. If it changes, you're good, you can use this - if not, you will probably have to restart idl and do this process again.

Hitting "-" or "=" will move you between the different echelle orders. Tap the "=" once and you should be looking at order number 67. (It's labeled near the top near the x and y values).

Bunch of other commands can be found by typing "H" in the window… It'll pop up and say:

::: Help Menu::::

l — Set left (that's a lower case L)
r — set right
b — set bottom
t — set top

etc.

Set the graph by putting the cursor to the left of the lines, tapping "l", then to the right of the lines, "r", and then just above the highest noise in that and tap "t".

To combine the data:

Run in the Oct 5th directory

To print headers of file:

hires0069.fits.gz to output.0069

in IDL run:

openW,foo,'output.0069',/Get_Lun
printf,foo,headfits('hires0069.fits.gz')
free_lun,foo

Convert 2004 Data To Ascii

In Kingpin:

/hires/xavier/alpha/Oct04/2004-October-0[3,4,5]/

run IDL from the directory above "FSPEC"

> idl

IDL> write_ascii,'FSpec/all_PHL957_B.fits',67,'FSpec/all_PHL957_B67.ascii'

This calls the program "write_ascii" the location and filename, which echelle order (67), and what to call the output file.

The file is output in the directory FSpec.

Data headers for 2004 data:

IDL> openW,lun,'marc.0097',/Get_Lun
IDL> printf,lun,headfits('hires0097.fits.gz')
IDL> free_lun,lun
